At "The Spanish Update", we aim to help English speakers build lifelong friendships with Hispanic folks. We do our best to provide context and cues about current events in our countries, so you can strike up a conversation with co-workers, extended family, strangers in the streets, or basically anyone.

We also know it is hard traveling, or having someone you care about visiting or living in a Latin American country; we aim to keep travelers, students, business people, or anyone informed about events that may affect your experience while visiting us.
From the bottom of our hearts:

Thankyou

for helping us create bridges between our communities

-Say Hi to "Leopardus Tilcayo"

This jaguar-like-looking cat was officially recognized as its own species at the beginning of October 2026. Native to the Amazon rainforests of Bolivia, it managed to remain largely unknown and mistaken for other cats, according to some locals.

Thanks to some DNA Studies, it was recently categorized as a new species of tiger cat, receiving the name "Leupardos Tilcayo". For now, only one is kept in a sanctuary; nevertheless, it's possible that other members of the species are roaming the Amazon.

-Feliz dia de la hispanidad.
Around October, some Hispanic communities celebrate 'Día de la Hispanidad '. It might be a great chance to build friendships.

But what is "Hispanic"?

The term is related to Spain and the Spanish language. Generally, any Spanish-speaking person is Hispanic.

What is Latino then?

This other term is more related to Latin America in current times. Any person with ties or ancestry from Latin America may be called Latino or Latina, even Brazilians, although they don't necessarily speak Spanish.
